Is your collector car insured like a collector car?

  1. Agreed value or actual cash value. A standard auto policy usually pays actual cash value: market value minus depreciation. Collector policies commonly use agreed value, a number you and the insurer set up front. Which does yours use?
  2. Is the value current? Update it after restoration work or big market moves. Keep appraisals, receipts, and dated photos.
  3. How you actually drive it. Collector policies usually limit use. Make sure shows, club drives, and weekend trips match what your policy allows.
  4. Where it's kept. Many collector policies require a locked, enclosed garage. Confirm the storage address on the policy is right.
  5. Daily driver. Collector coverage generally assumes you have a separate car for everyday use. Check it's listed.
  6. Spare parts and tools. Are they covered, and up to what amount?
  7. Who drives it. List everyone who does.

Before you park it for winter

  1. Don't cancel coverage. Fire, theft, and hail don't take the winter off.
  2. If it's moving to a different storage spot, update the address on the policy.
  3. Ask whether your policy has a storage option, and what it still covers.
  4. Photograph the car before storage, with the date.

Send me your current policy and a few photos of the car, and I'll go through this list with you.
